You can see the effects of global warming in a new high-resolution map that shows carbon locked up in tropical forest vegetation and emitted by land-use practices in Peru's Amazon. The maps were created with satellite mapping, airborne-laser technology, and ground-based plot surveys. And the images may help pave the way for a new United Nations monitoring system to curb deforestation and forest degradation....Read the full story on TreeHugger

I lived in Wyoming for 8 years and it breaks my heart that the state's landscape is being so significantly altered by the oil, coal and gas industry. I never visited the town of Pavillion when I was in Wyoming, and now I don't have much of a desire to go there after federal officials told locals to avoid drinking their tap water and to make sure they have ventilation when showering. Pavillion is located close to several natural gas drilling sites. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

From the very beginning, TreeHugger has been a huge advocate for local food. Ever since Time Magazine declared that local food was going mainstream back in 2007, there's been a steady stream of retailers and restaurateurs getting in on the locavore bandwagon. Heck, we even have <a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/03/michele-ob...Read the full story on TreeHugger

We are always intrigued by biomimetic technologies that find answers based in imitating naturally developed systems. Mechanical locomotion that imitates animal locomotion is particularly interesting. So we liked finding this video of a robotic snake being which is developed by a team at Carnegie Mellon University.

The motion of the snake-bot would allow it to maneuver through tighter spaces than either people or other mechanisms can easily move through. According to the researchers, "Snake robots can use their many internal degrees of freedom to thread through tightly packed volumes accessing locations that people and machinery otherwise cannot use." The flexibility and maneuverability of the snakebot allow it to move through a wide range of terrain types, and could be useful for a range of tasks from building maintenance to field research.

See the video after the jump...

Eco Factor: Autonomous turbines to move freely in water to capture underwater currents.

We have already seen many kinds of turbines harness power from the winds. How about underwater turbines moving freely in water to capture the shifting current? Sounds really interesting! Darris White, associate mechanical engineering professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida is working on building a swarm of underwater turbines that could trap energy. He is developing a control algorithm that will allow autonomous turbines to float together.

Behaving like schools of fish, these autonomous turbines would be tethered to each other, allowing them to move in synchronization to tap underwater currents. These turbines that wouldn’t require to be affixed to one spot on the seafloor will communicate with each other through their sensors. Researches claim that there is 21,000 times more energy in that underwater stream than Niagara Falls, holding the potential to power more a million households, so harnessing the power of underwater currents could prove to be more fruitful.
